TAGANROG

Iris folding (Iris Folding - "rainbow folding") - the technique of folding strips of colored paper at an angle in the form of a twisting spiral.

The name is quite simple to explain - the finished image resembles in its structure the structure of the iris of the human eye or the diaphragm of a camera.

This technique originated in the Netherlands. Local craftsmen made their work from colored paper. Nowadays, not only different kinds colored paper and cardboard, but also fabric, ribbons, tree leaves, etc.

Today, Iris Folding is used to decorate postcards, photo albums, notebooks, gift wrappings, cushions, wall panels, women's handbags, etc..

The iris folding technique is a technique for working with paper. It is quite simple and interesting for people of all ages. Children especially like it, as the resulting image pleases their eye with volume and a bright spatial solution. This master class can be used both in the classroom and in the classroom outside of school hours.

TECHNOLOGY OF MANUFACTURING POSTCARDS

To make a postcard you will need:

pattern with a pattern

colored cardboard for the base and background

colored ribbons (braid or paper)

glue (or tape)

paperclips

craft knife (or scissors)

decorative elements (ribbons, feather, flower)

To begin with, we will select the work according to the finished scheme.

We transfer the diagram to the cardboard base.

Carefully cut out the pattern along the contour with a breadboard knife.

We determine which side we want to make the front and put the base with the wrong side up.

We put our strip layout scheme under the base. We fasten them lightly with tape or a paper clip.

According to the scheme, we need 3 colors of stripes. We will use decorative ribbon instead of paper. We decide on the colors: A - yellow without a pattern, B - dark yellow with a pattern, C - orange with a pattern.

Cut off a small piece of color A tape or a strip of paper and attach it to the base so that its edge falls exactly on the dividing line.

Stripes 1, 3, 4 and 5 are done in the same color. Krepimih

Strip 6, according to the diagram, is done in color C (we chose an orange braid with a pattern). Do not forget that you need to turn the strip with the pattern down.

According to the scheme, strip 7 is made of color B. dark yellow with a pattern. Attach this strip.

Thus, gradually fill the entire figure.

On the front side we get a neat drawing.

We decorate the postcard. To do this, cut out the shell from embossed cardboard and attach it to the base of the motif.

We fasten the eye, and then the whole general motive for the base postcard.

From small pieces of a feather, a silk ribbon and a flower, we make an ornament and attach it to a postcard.

We fasten several small scraps of embossed cardboard. We fasten a decorative braid or strip along the perimeter of the base-postcard.

And in the end we get a charming Easter card.

As you can see, this technique is not as complicated as it seems at first glance. Mastering it step by step, you will gradually be able to move on to creating copyright and very interesting works. I am sure that they will be unique - after all, you will create them yourself and put into them the whole rainbow of feelings - bright and kind. And all this rainbow will be reflected in your works.

Inspiration to you and Happy Easter!

How to do:
1. Print out the template. Using carbon paper, transfer the silhouette of the egg to cardboard.

2. Using a clerical knife or scissors, cut out the silhouette.
3. Now fix the template on the front side of the cardboard with tape or paper clips.

4. Prepare the strips. The width of the strips depends on the width of the strips in the template, multiply it by two and add another 3-5mm.
5. Fold each strip in half lengthwise and iron the fold.
6. On the template we find the number 1. We apply the first strip so that the fold line exactly matches the line on the template. We glue the strip, lubricating only the area around the slot with glue.

7. Glue the second strip and subsequent strips clockwise. Do not glue the strips to the template. Sometimes it is more convenient to use pieces of adhesive tape, rather than glue. To prevent the strips from opening, you can glue them too. Cut long strips.
8. Glue a rectangle to the center.

9. Let's turn the work around. Let's take a template.

10. If desired, the outline can be circled with glitter glue.
11. It remains only to seal the wrong side with a white sheet.

And here are examples of crafts for Easter that can be done using the iris folding technique

Supervisor: Kotova Nadezhda Aleksandrovna, teacher of MBDOU "Cherlaksky Kindergarten№2"

Age: the master class is intended for older children up to school age, primary school age, teachers and parents.
Purpose: gift for the bright holiday of the Resurrection of Christ
Target: making a postcard with your own hands
Tasks:
- introduce children to the technique of iris folding,
- develop the ability to hold scissors correctly, cut narrow strips along the fold, and then wider ones;
- to form the skills of children in the technique of spreading paper parts with glue;
- Cultivate accuracy in work, perseverance

Equipment: ruler, scissors, simple pencil, adhesive tape, glue, colored cardboard, colored paper, checkered sheet, napkins.

Progress:
On a sheet in a cage, we measure 12 cm with a ruler, draw a square. In the square, we retreat along the cells and draw another square, so we continue until we get the smallest square.

Draw an oval on cardboard and cut it out. With the help of adhesive tape we fix a sheet with a square, put cardboard with a cut out oval on top.

Next, we measure 2 cm on colored paper, draw lines, cut into strips. We bend the strips in half, we get strips of 1 cm.

We begin to glue the strips clockwise, each strip can be fixed with tape or glue, tape was used in this work.

Observe the alternation of colors exactly. Next, we fill the entire oval in this way, and cut out a square in the center, paste it.

We turn over the cardboard, and a colored oval will open in front of us. Glue colored paper on the wrong side.

Then you can ennoble the card with a flower, for this card it took napkins, which were rolled into lumps and decorated the contour of the egg, napkins were also used for the flower on this card.

Postcard is ready!

Iris Folding (Iris Folding)- the technique of folding strips of colored paper at an angle in the form of a twisting spiral. The work done using this technique is often similar to the aperture of a camera or the iris of the eye. From there comes the name of the technique -. The Iris Folding technique (Iris Folding) originated in Holland (Netherlands), local craftsmen performed their work from colored paper.Currently, not only various types of colored paper and cardboard, but also ribbons are used to work in this technique.Today, Iris Folding is used to decorate postcards, notes, books, photo albums, collages, etc. The designs made using the Iris Folding technique look very unusual, at least for a person who does not daily manufacture works using this technique. Iris Folding can be used in pure form (for example, made exclusively using IF), or it can be a “decorative” addition to works made using other techniques.

I will describe several main stages that the master goes through before he receives final work(a classic case), performed using the Iris Folding technique.

1) A drawing is applied to a sheet of paper (the paper is usually thick). The pattern is cut along the contour.
2) Iris template is being prepared. The number and arrangement of the stripes on it will have to match the number and arrangement of the stripes on the finished work. Each strip on the template is marked with a number in order to determine the sequence of gluing these very strips. Obviously, strip number 1 is pasted first. Next - in ascending order. Also, the iris template may contain hints regarding, for example, the color of the glued strip.
3) Strips of colored paper are cut. The length, width, color and number of stripes meet the requirements determined by iris. In addition, the strips (each strip), as a rule, are folded lengthwise in half, four times, etc., so that they turn out thicker and denser, and the edge turns out to be more even.
4) The strips are glued on the reverse side of the paper on which the pattern is cut out, with a layering (each subsequent strip partially covered the previous one). Each step must be checked against the template.

The name of this technique - iris folding - can be translated as "rainbow folding". The drawing is filled with thin paper strips, which, overlapping each other at a certain angle, create an interesting effect of a twisting spiral. To make a Christmas tree, you will need a sheet of colored cardboard or thick paper, thin colored paper in three different colors (it can be plain or colorful), an iris template based on a triangle , which you can build yourself or print ready-made. For gluing, use a glue stick.
First, get acquainted with the technique of building an iris pattern. For this work, the template is built on the basis of a triangle with a base of 14 cm and a height of 16 cm. The step is 1 cm. These dimensions can be changed at your discretion.

  1. Cut strips of paper in three colors. The width of the strip should be twice as large as the pitch, plus an allowance of 2-4 mm. For our step, the width of the strip is 22-24 mm. The very first stripes should be a little wider, as they cover the outer contours of the Christmas tree. It is difficult to calculate how many bands you need right away. It is better to cut them in the process of doing the job.
  2. Fold each strip in half lengthwise.
  3. Cut out five strips for the trunk of different shades in the size of 35x20 mm. Fold them in half.
  4. Draw a Christmas tree silhouette on the cardboard. Carefully cut it out using a utility knife or scissors. Draw or print the iris pattern.
  5. Lay the cardboard on the template with the wrong side. The cut-out silhouette may be slightly larger than the template. Secure the template, for example, with paper clips. All work will be done from the inside out.
  6. Do the stem first. Lightly grease the area of cardboard around the slot on the right side with glue. Glue the first strip. The fold line on the strip should line up with the line on the template. To glue the second strip, you can glue the cardboard on top, bottom and the previous strip with glue. To prevent the strips from opening, they can be slightly glued in some places. Sometimes this technique does not use glue, but small pieces of adhesive tape, which fix the strips along the edges.
  7. Fill the entire trunk with stripes.
  8. Take the longest and widest strip. Just put it to work first. The fold line should be along the first line of the iris template. If the strip is too long, cut it. Glue the strip, smearing a little glue on the cardboard along the edges of the slot.
  9. Glue a strip of a different color so that it matches the rightmost line of the template.
  10. Glue the third strip from the bottom along the bottom border of the template.
  11. Prepare the next strip of the first color. First, attach, measure the desired length, cut, then glue. Glue smear not a strip, but the places of gluing! Use a little glue, just to make the strip “grab”.
  12. Glue the second strip of the second color, aligning it with the next pattern line.
  13. Glue the second strip of the third color along the next line. Continue gluing in the same order. Strictly clockwise, strictly alternating the selected colors. Each time the stripes will become shorter and shorter. At the end, small scraps cut off at the very beginning will go into action. When a small empty triangle remains at the end, cover it with a piece of paper in one of the three colors.

Now you can flip the work and admire the result. You can glue garlands and decorate the Christmas tree as you wish. We completed these and other Christmas trees at the master class on 12/13/2007 in about one hour. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Slide 10-11

Preparing strips of paper. It is necessary to decide what colors the eggs will be. Since Easter is a holiday of light and goodness, let's make the card gentle, in bright colors. For this, I prepared green, pink, blue and white paper.

The width of the stripes is determined by the width of the step that is used in the circuit. We have a step width of 15 mm, which means that the width of the strips will be 25 mm. (Step +10mm for bend). We put the sheet vertically and draw stripes with the help of a ruler. And then we cut.

slide 12

Then fold each strip in half lengthwise, color side up.

slide 13

Draw the silhouette of an egg on the cardboard. Carefully cut it out using a utility knife or scissors.

Slide 14

Draw or print the iris pattern.

slide 15

Lay the cardboard on the template with the wrong side. The cut-out silhouette may be slightly larger than the template. Secure the template, for example, with paper clips. All work will be done from the inside out.

slide 16

The length of the strip should be such that it goes through the entire cutout silhouette, with an excess of about 0.5 cm at the top and bottom (so that it can be glued freely). Glue smear only the ends of the strips that go beyond the pattern. We move all the time in the order of numbers and observe the exact alternation of colors. It is indicated on the side.

Slide 17

Color A- PINK

ColorB- WHITE

ColorC- GREEN

Color D-BLUE

Slide 18

Take the longest and widest strip. Just put it to work first. The fold line should be along the first line of the iris template. If the strip is too long, cut it. Glue the strip, smearing a little glue on the cardboard along the edges of the slot.

Slide 19

Glue a strip of a different color so that it coincides with the extreme bottom line of the template.

Slide 20

Glue a second strip of pink on top along the bottom border of the template.

slide 21

Prepare the first strip of white. Use a little glue, just to make the strip “grab”.

slide 22

Glue the second strip of green color, aligning it with the pattern line.

slide 23

Glue the first blue strip along the next line.

slide 24

Continue gluing in the same order. Strictly clockwise, strictly alternating the selected colors. Each time the stripes will become shorter and shorter. At the end, small scraps cut off at the very beginning will go into action.

Slide 25

When a small empty triangle remains at the end, cover it with a piece of paper in one of the three colors.
